Impact of Marijuana on Cardiovascular Dysfunction

The effect of marijuana is seen on the cardiovascular function. The smoke from marijuana and oral usage of THC may cause rapid heartbeat referred as tachycardia. This rise could be 20-100% above baseline. The heart rate is greatest in the first 10-20 minutes of marijuana consumption and decreases sharply and steadily. If the drug consumption is through smoke then the increased heart rate may last for three hours and if it is consumed orally, it may last for five hours. Based on the position of the individual the blood pressure changes in the drug consumed individuals. It increases when the person is in a reclining position and decreases when he is standing. The decrease in blood pressure due to change in position from lying or sitting position to standing position is termed as postural hypotension that causes faintness and dizziness. Cardiovascular diseases are the most causes for the death in the U.S and this is further increased due to consumption of marijuana.
