The state once celebrated for having health focus, activity, outdoorsy citizens, is now on the top of the ist with the highest percentage of people using illicit drugs. The report showed the darker side of the state in drug and alcohol abuse.

According to the recent study conducted by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA), marijuana, cocaine and alcohol abuse in the state of Colorado is among the highest in the nation.

The study revealed the number of youth in Colorado who used marijuana in the past year was 38 percent, which is higher than the national average of 29 percent. Not only Colorado, the SAMHSA report also provided the information about the abuse of different substances like illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. They also gave the information on the need for treatment, and mental health factors in their detailed report of “State Estimates of Substance Use and Mental Disorders from the 2008-2009 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health”
